Day 30 – Your favorite song at this time last year

This was my go-to song for junior year, and remains the second most played song on my iTunes.

Day 29 – A song from your childhood

Never let it be said that I don't come from an awesome family.

Day 28 – A song that makes you feel guilty

I'm not sure exactly how this is different from the guilty pleasure song, especially since I totally went for it with that one.
Hmmm. I've got it though, I think. This song was playing a lot at dances my sophomore year of high school, when things were going on I should have paid more attention to at the time, and which I still feel guilty about, even though things turned out fine.
Still like the song, though.

Day 27 – A song that you wish you could play

When I retire, I'm going to take cello lessons. I'll probably never be good enough, but at least I can try. Or, I mean, pick any stringed instrument. This piece. Gah.

Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92: II. Allegretto

I have to thank the opening credits to The Fall (amazing movie) for introducing me:

Day 26 – A song that you can play on an instrument

I can play the opening to this song on my cheeks, but any instruments I ever learned I stopped being able to play a long time ago.

Day 25 – A song that makes you laugh

I also think this song is pretty insightful/serious/whatever, but what can I say. "HIPPIES movin' to the hills" gets me every time.

Day 24 – A song that you want to play at your funeral

Roommate J and I have a lot of bets going. Some are closer to resolution than others. One I take very much to heart is our life bet wherein, you guessed it, the one who lives longer wins. This came about as a result of a discussion we had sophomore year, where I told her that she would always have a better GPA than me, but that I would live longer on more sleep. Then we decided to have provisions in our wills to let our family members know that the little old woman dancing on our grave is only doing it out of lasting friendship.

So, when I told Roommate J about this prompt, and lamented the fact that, so far, no one has written a song called "Suck It, [Roommate J], I Won," she proposed:

Day 23 – A song that you want to play at your wedding

Oh my lord. I was never one of those girls who planned her wedding down to the last detail when she was, like, twelve. I just sort of floated the idea of having it at the Chapel in the [now sadly absent] Pines in Colorado and made jokes about which relatives would show up for it.
I find it increasingly difficult to envision my own wedding*, but I may or may not have spent some time, off and on, thinking about which of my friends will be in the wedding party: Roommate J, obviously, and Subcontinent and HarvardGirl.
I am also prepared for a lot of crying (one more so than the other, but only because leakiness runs in the family) and public displays of affection on the part of my Aged Ps. What I am not prepared for is song choice. So you'll forgive me if I blatantly bend the rules today and offer up several contenders.

It Was A Very Good Year

I Only Want To Be With You

Wild Is The Wind

You Really Got Me

So In Love

*Partly due to lack of eligible bachelors, although, to quote the ever spot-on Roommate J, "Who cares about the GROOM?!? This is AMERICA!"

Day 22 – A song that you listen to when you’re sad

No. Question. I think I'm written about this here before, but occasionally when I'm having a rough day this song starts spontaneously playing in cafés and stores I go into. And when it doesn't start spontaneously playing, I turn it on. Although, of course, I have the eight minute version.

Day 21 – A song that you listen to when you’re happy

Like there was any question what song I was going to pick.

Day 20 – A song that you listen to when you’re angry

When I'm angry I try to calm down. For some reason, listening to calming music only makes it worse. Listening to a song like this, on the other hand, is kind of cathartic. (And this particular song was used to great effect in the trailer to the BBC's Sherlock.)

Uprising

Day 19 – A song from your favorite album

My goodness. This prompt is presuming a degree of music knowledge I just do not have. If I like a song, I get it. I don't go for whole albums, just like I've only very rarely read an entire book of short stories. There are usually a few good ones; the rest is just filler.
That being said, I had an album--and by album I mean, yes vinyl--that I used to listen to while doing my math homework in high school. It retrospect, this probably explains a lot about the quality of my math homework in high school. So, no, not my favorite album. That honor would probably go to Coldplay's Viva La Vida Or Death And All Of His Friends, but I've done Coldplay here.

Day 18 – A song that you wish you heard on the radio

Roommate J and I heard the radio edit for the first time the other day. It is so, so wrong. "Forget You"? Forget THAT.

F**k You

Day 17 – A song that you hear often on the radio

I hear this damn song everywhere. EVERYWHERE. If Roommate J isn't playing it, Master Awesome is writing about it on Facebook. If Master Awesome isn't writing about it on Facebook, our upstairs neighbors are singing along with it on Rock Band. If our upstairs neighbors aren't singing along with it on Rock Band, it's playing at the mall. And if it's not playing at the mall it's DEFINITELY playing on the radio in the car.
Can't...escape...help...me...

How sad.

Day 15 – A song that describes you

Gosh, this is a good one. It's so good it's got me using words like "gosh," which I haven't really said outside of Notre Dame or the taxi I ride to and from prison in ever since I realized my mother wouldn't smite me if I decided to forgo it.
Since I'm thinking of my mother, I almost picked this song because it's one of her favorites and because, well, yes, indeed. It's also tempting to go with something really cryptic, like any Killers song ever or an instrumental.
In the end, though, I have to go with this one. It reminds me of a lot of great people/things/moments in my life, and it has the added bonus of being true.

Day 14 – A song that no one would expect you to love

You tell me, people, would you have expected me to like any of my recent picks? Probably not. Still, onwards and upwards.
The word is "love," not "like." Okay, okay, let's see about this.
(I'm laughing right now because I thought I came up with a really good one, but then I shook my head and started cracking up and said to myself, "No, [Nom de Plume], that is exactly what everyone would expect you to love.")
Okay. This wouldn't surprise Roommate J, who introduced me to it, or my parents, who very kindly allowed it on to the Top 500, but other people might be surprised that I like something this...I'm not sure what the word would be. Whatever. I totally love it.

Day 13 – A song that is a guilty pleasure

Almost every song on every writing playlist I have would fit the bill. I'm going to go with this one, though, because I really do feel guilty about it. It's not just for show. Oh lord. I can't believe I'm posting this. Can we just blame the spotty resurgence of my high school self and get over it?

Day 12 – A song from a band you hate

I'm going to assume that this is a song I like from a band I hate, which is interesting/challenging/etc. It's possible I've been watching too many Sherlock Holmes adaptations recently, but I'm up for a challenge.
At first I was going to go with Firework by Katy Perry, since I really dislike her but the song's okay. I didn't want to settle for okay, though, so I pushed on. There's Justin Bieber, of course, but I don't like anything by him. Taylor Swift is slowly (very slowly) winning me over (shhh! don't tell anyone), so she's out. Then, I thought, hey! How else is rap going to get on this list?
I don't hate him, per se, but Kanye West kind of seems like a jerk. And he might not like George Bush, but I refuse to do all the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend on this one. The world is more complicated than that.
Jerk or not, there is one song (besides the sudden eleventh hour appearance of You Give Love A Bad Name) that I have looped more than any other while writing this thesis (and I kind of hate to say it, but I sort of dig the music video).

Day 11 – A song from your favorite band

Here's the thing: I thought I didn't have a favorite band until I saw this prompt and then I knew exactly which song I would pick. So, congratulations, Coldplay, you have the dubious honor of being my favorite band.

Yes

And now, a special bonus along the lines of my Hair post. This is from Young @ Heart. (I couldn't embed it, and I apologize for the German subtitles, but seriously.) If you haven't seen this movie, stop what you're doing right now and go watch it. Context is everything.
